100th Anniversary of the Birth of Mingei / Kyoto

The Japanese word ‘mingei’ is literally translated as “crafts of the people” and was conceived through discussions of beauty in functional objects between philosopher Yanagi Soetsu (1889–1961) and potters Kawai Kanjiro (1890–1966) and Hamada Shoji (1894–1978) during a research trip in 1925. Marking the 100th anniversary of the term’s inception, this catalogue to a special exhibition introduces a range of works from individual artisans and artists who promoted the ‘mingei’ movement. In addition, it re-examines the special relationship between Kyoto and ‘mingei’ through works and materials of its makers and supporters, including pottery, textile, lacquerware, and wood.

Le terme japonais « mingei » se traduit littéralement par « artisanat populaire » ; il est né de discussions sur la beauté des objets utilitaires entre le philosophe Yanagi Sōetsu (1889–1961) et les céramistes Kawai Kanjirō (1890–1966) et Hamada Shōji (1894–1978) lors d'un voyage d'étude en 1925. Publié à l'occasion du centenaire de la création de ce terme, le catalogue de cette exposition spéciale présente un éventail d'œuvres réalisées par les artisans et artistes qui ont promu le mouvement « mingei ». Il réexamine également la relation privilégiée entre Kyoto et le « mingei » à travers les œuvres et les matériaux de ses créateurs et partisans, incluant la céramique, le textile, les laques et le travail du bois.
